Unpacking Impact

In this months newsletter I really wanted to take the opportunity to unpack impact. I think its something many of you reading this newsletter, natural problems solvers, strive for, and I know it's something I have striven for and will continue to do so. At its core the promise of impact is simple, impact = problem solved and scaling scaling impact = many problems solved for many, but does it always?

In both my roles - as a parent and as the owner of a research and content firm - I've had many opportunities to contemplate on the notion of 'impact'. It's a term that's inherently dynamic, varying based on the context and the objectives at hand. It brings to mind the image of a ball striking a wall, leaving a unique imprint each time.

When viewed from a parenting lens, each action or word serves as an educational beacon for my child. This process of imprinting isn't deliberate, yet it's pervasive. Our children observe us, absorbing our actions, reactions, and emotions, all of which eventually shape their perspective of the world.

This principle of impact extends to my professional sphere as well. Leading a firm committed to creating and magnifying a 'positive impact' has been an enlightening journey. However, the term 'positive impact' remains nebulous until explicitly defined, and this definition often varies based on our individual goals and those who stand to benefit from our actions.

Just like in parenting, our actions have consequences. Understanding the potential impact of these consequences and adapting them to resonate positively with our intended audience is a complex process. It requires us to consider the nuances of our target demographics, their needs, and their expectations.

The pursuit of 'positive impact' isn't a static objective. The goalposts keep shifting, demanding our agility and willingness to reassess our strategies continually. This exercise can be as exciting as it is challenging, pushing us to adapt and grow.

One of the most enlightening takeaways from both these experiences has been the influential role of storytelling. Stories offer a powerful way to process and share our understanding of the world. They can encapsulate the essence of impact, turning an abstract concept into a relatable narrative.

Whether it's parenthood or running a business, creating and scaling impact isn't linear or predictable. It's a journey filled with humility, fear, and exhilaration. Each win, no matter how small, nudges us closer to our ultimate goal. Each encounter with the shifting goalposts of 'positive impact' offers an opportunity to grow stronger and more adept at handling future challenges.

So, as we tread this journey, let's remember that every action leaves an imprint. Let's strive to ensure these imprints contribute positively to those who stand to benefit from them. And, as we adapt and grow, let's continue creating and amplifying impact in a way that resonates most profoundly with our intended audience.

Go well,

Patrick
